Walk-Trot Transitions on the Long Side
Focus: Transitions, Responsiveness, Rhythm
Equipment: Letter markers
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Track right at the working walk along the long side.
- At the first letter (H, S, E, V, or K), ask for an upward transition to working trot.
- Close your lower legs and allow your hips to follow the new rhythm. Keep your hands steady.
- Trot to the next letter, then ask for a downward transition back to walk.
- The downward transition should come from your seat and core: stop following the trot rhythm and close your fingers on the reins.
- Alternate walk and trot at every letter along the long side.
- Focus on making each transition happen exactly at the letter — not 3 strides early or late.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- The transition happening too late because the rider doesn't prepare early enough.
- The trot departure being abrupt and fast instead of flowing forward smoothly.
- The walk transition taking too many strides — the horse leaking forward instead of responding promptly.
- The rider using too much rein for the downward transition instead of the seat and core.
Variations & Progressions
- Add halt transitions between the walk-trot transitions for three-gait work.
- Progress to trot-canter transitions at the letters.
- Perform the transitions on a 20-meter circle instead of the long side.
Tip: Prepare your transition 3 strides before the letter. Think of it as: prepare, ask, allow.
