Start on a 20-meter circle at the working trot. Establish a steady rhythm and consistent bend.
Over the next 2-3 revolutions, gradually spiral inward by applying more inside leg to outside rein, decreasing the circle by about 2 meters per revolution.
Continue spiraling until you reach approximately a 10-meter circle. Maintain the same tempo throughout.
Hold the 10-meter circle for one full revolution, then begin spiraling back out using a leg yield motion.
Push your horse outward with your inside leg while keeping the bend. The outside rein opens slightly to allow the expansion.
Return to the full 20-meter circle and check that your rhythm and balance have been maintained.
Repeat in the other direction. The stiff side will feel significantly harder; be patient and reward small improvements.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Spiraling in too quickly, losing the gradual progression and creating a choppy circle.
Losing bend as you spiral out, causing the horse to fall through the outside shoulder.
Allowing the tempo to speed up on the spiral out or slow down on the spiral in.
Leaning in with your upper body instead of keeping your weight centered.
Variations & Progressions
Perform the spiral at the canter for advanced collection and balance work.
Add a transition to walk at the smallest circle, then trot on the spiral out.
Ride the spiral in posting trot, then switch to sitting trot for the spiral out.
Tip: Count your revolutions on the way in so you can match them on the way out. Symmetry is the goal.
